Just a Few Short Days to the End of the Shaker Square Contest

The Essence of Shaker Square Art Contest is nearly over and we have already gotten some very nice entries. Most of the contest entries are on the wall in our gallery, although I need to hang up a few more. You can come in and see all of the contest entries after July 4 in Lake Erie Artists Gallery. They will be up until at least the end of July.

While you are visiting Shaker Square to see the art contest entries, you should also take your time on Saturday, July 2, yes this Saturday from 10 am to 5 pm to see our booth at the Larchmere Festival. We will be located at the corner of Larchmere and 130th St, almost directly behind our shop (a block behind it), and will have several items for sale from the shop.

The gallery will also be open our regular hours this Saturday, but we will be closed on July 4th for the holiday.

Lake Erie Artists Gallery is offering a discount on classes this spring to entice you to try something new. Each class is geared for beginners, designed to teach you a new skill, and have you walk out with a new piece of jewelry or art by the end of the classroom session.

Classes are taught by experienced artists who can guide you along the way.

For April the Featured Class is the Copper and Silver Celtic Visions Star Pendant taught by Katie Mullins. In this class, students make a pendant completely out of copper and silver jump rings, shaped in this Celtic star shape. At the Tower City Arts Festival

I have spent the entire weekend at Tower City this weekend. In fact, I am typing this post from my booth at the Tower City Arts Festival right now.

The Tower City Arts Festival started 4 years ago, when I got together with arts promoter, Lisa Nemeth, and we started the first ever Tower City Arts Festival that ran one weekend of the Cleveland International Film Festival. That year, we had a huge blizzard, and only had about 6 booths, yet the festival was a success.

Since that time, Lisa has run the Tower City Arts Festival herself, and done an awesome job of it. The festival now runs both weekends of the film festival and a few days in between. My booth is on the north side of the fountain facing The Children's Place shop. If you come down to Tower City for the film festival or a game, stop by and check out what is going on around the fountain.

St. Patrick's Day is a Herald to Spring

While we may see a bit more snow yet, I think we are finally heading into spring, with the wonderful herald of the Cleveland OH St. Patrick's Day parade downtown yesterday. It was refreshing seeing everyone dressed in kelly green for the fun day, and it was a beautiful day, perfect for a heralding of the anxiously awaited spring.

For those who still have a little bit of blarney left, we have some Irish claddaugh jewelry in the shop, and a very cool necklace with a teeny tiny shamrock on it. Check our window as you stroll by.

With the onset of spring, Lake Erie Artists Gallery is the co-creator of a new Shaker Square art contest, the Essence of Shaker Square, which runs through July 1. We are looking for new images of Shaker Square, rules for the art contest are here.

Spring means that while it is still chilly, it is also easier to get out of the house. We have lots of classes that you can sign up for, meant for beginners. Sign up early so spaces do not run out, and take advantage of the warmer weather to meet with your friends. We will have some Saturday party classes that will include a complimentary glass of wine and snacks, great fun on a Saturday evening or afternoon. Classes are now listed on three separate pages on the gallery website, and we are adding a fourth soon. You can sign up for classes online, in person, or over the phone, but we do need 5 days notice in advance to get the materials for the class in time.

We will also have a booth at Tower City during the Cleveland International Film Festival for the Tower City Arts Festival. Come see us there.

The Essence of Shaker Square Art Contest

The brand new Essence of Shaker Square art contest is looking for entries that answer the question--"What is the Essence of Shaker Square?"

As many people know, Shaker Square has a very long history, and is the second oldest shopping center in the United States. The Square was built by the Van Sweringen brothers, and has been a focal point for the area community since then.

The Essence of Shaker Square Contest is being run by Dewey Forward from Dewey's Coffee Cafe and the Shaker Square Popcorn Shop, and Paula Atwell from Lake Erie Artists Gallery.

Lake Erie Artists Participating in Shopping at the Mal{tz}! Montefiore Event

Lake Erie Artists Gallery is participating in a new event at Montefiore's Maltz Auditorium this year called Shopping at the Mal{tz}! on Thursday February 10 from 9 am to 4 pm.

The event is a mix of artists and other vendors including one of my personal favorites, Chocolate Emporium. They make some really yummy chocolate and are located right down the street from where I live. If you haven't tried their chocolate covered pretzels or popcorn, well, yum!

Anyway, I will be there all day, representing the gallery, and I will be bringing with me art jewelry, pottery, and glassware. There will also be a chair massage booth, and food. Proceeds from the event benefit United Way of Greater Cleveland and Jewish Federation of Cleveland annual campaigns.

I am always looking for handmade and one of a kind gifts for my friends and family, and this will be one of the only shows in Cleveland this year during February, and I can't wait to attend. I haven't been to Montefiore in a while, and they have such a lovely facility. It will be out of the cold and snow, and should be a great opportunity to see friends and neighbors. Shaker Square is a Winter Wonderland

Shaker Square was a magical fairyland Saturday evening. The weather was clear, and the trees all around the Square are lit up with Christmas lights. It truly feels magical, and it is a great place to bring young children who would enjoy the lights.

Today it is a snowy winter wonderland with the high winds, and the snowflakes furiously coming down. But the Shaker Square sidewalks are salted and clear, and the parking lots have also been plowed.

Right now I am at Dewey's, drinking some coffee, and getting work done before Lake Erie Artists Gallery opens up, but we have plenty of heat and a comfortable atmosphere for anyone who wants to get out of the cold, and shop.

We just got in some beautiful blown glass ornaments from artist Brien Strancar, but there is only a limited number, so hurry in before we run out! Happy Monday!

Like to Bead?

When we moved to Shaker Square, we knew that we had to get to know our neighborhood and our neighbors. What we are finding out is that our community likes to bead, and make their own jewelry for themselves and friends.

So we have started carrying beads by local artists like Daniel Echeverry. His beautiful lampwork is pictured above. These will fit on any standard size cord or chain, and are even more beautiful in person than in the picture.

Just finished stocking up on some new product from two of my favorite artists when it comes to gift items, especially for your family events, housewarmings, weddings, and engagement parties.

Tracy Shea, a wonderful potter from Garrettsville, Ohio, has delivered several new pieces to the gallery. Here are some pictures of a few of the items.

Mindy Sand has just brought in several pieces as well, including more of her wonderful party pattern wine glasses.

I also have other new pieces by Mindy that I don't have pictures of, but they are really beautiful. One of the pieces is a tall picture that matches the party pattern wine glasses, as well as some pilsner beer glasses, and small trays. So come visit us at Shaker Square and see what is new.

Larchmere Festival is Tomorrow

Don't miss the very cool Larchmere Festival tomorrow starting at 10 am. There is a lot going on that you can take part in including a Community Flea Market, , Antiques Fair, Bazaar Bizarre, and Larchmere Uncorked.

Lake Erie Artists Gallery is going to be participating in the Bazaar Bizarre from 10 am to 5 pm, and we will also be open during our regular hours from 8 am to 9 pm in our store. At the Bazaar Bizarre we will be featuring the jewelry by Paula Atwell, and Design a Necklace workshop, while our store will be open for regular shopping. Memorial Day Weekend at Shaker Square and Larchmere

This weekend is the official beginning of summer, and it sure feels like summer here at Shaker Square. For those of you who missed it, the Lake Erie Artists Gallery June newsletter is online with coupons, class listings, and live music for the summer. You can also go to our website for the listing of all arts and crafts classes, and sign up for them right there.

Memorial Day weekend will be busy here at Shaker Square. The first Saturday evening concert is this Saturday from 6 pm to 9 pm. The North Union Farmers Market is going strong every Saturday from 8 am to 12 noon, and Lake Erie Artists Gallery has live music every Saturday during the farmers market from 10 am to 12 noon.

Springtime on Shaker Square

After a long hard winter, spring has finally come in Cleveland, Ohio, and Shaker Square is showing off the beautiful landscaping as all of the flowers and greenery come out.

Lake Erie Artists Gallery is coming out of hibernation too with a change from winter to summer hours starting April 1, 2010. We will be open starting April 1 Monday and Wednesday from 11 am to 6 pm, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday from 11 am to 8 pm, and Saturdays from 8 am to 9 pm. You will also find us among the booths of the North Union Farmers Market at Shaker Square from 8 am to 12 noon on Saturdays.

We will be closed on Friday April 9 and Saturday April 10 for a private event. I look forward to seeing everyone emerge from their winter cocoons to stroll the Square.

We had a very well attended COSE arts network event at the gallery tonight. There were about 35 people attending, including lawyers from the group Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts who spoke a bit about lease contracts for artists.

Thank you to Matt Charboneau and the COSE team for organizing the social event, and double thanks to the staff from Sarava who cooked some wonderful food and served drinks to all of us. And left the gallery in spic and span condition.

Tomorrow, Tuesday February 23, 2010 from 6 to 8 pm, COSE Arts Network will be having a social at Lake Erie Artists Gallery, at Shaker Square, next to Balaton Restaurant on the NW quadrant of the square.

Food will be provided by neighboring restaurant, Sarava, so of course it will be delicious, and the evening will be a chance to network with Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts who will give a short presentation on how they can help artists with legal issues such as leases and contracts.

In addition, we are hosting artist and miliner Dee Hall, with a special presentation in honor of Black History Month, handmade hats, bags, honoring Black History and Culture in the United States.

I really love this pottery by Tracy Shea. We have this bowl in stock right now, and I am sitting here falling in love with it. Tracy's work is just so beautiful and functional. Tracy makes all of her pottery in her studio in the Akron area. Her glazes are hand mixed and dipped, and all of her pottery is safe for oven, microwave and dishwasher.

Preparing for the Colder Weather

Today is October 1, and Lake Erie Artists Gallery has been in our new home officially four months now, because we moved out of Tower City in April, and took one month to really get things going in May. The store has taken on a life of its own, and now we move into the cooler fall and winter weather heading to the holiday shopping season.

Due to the fact that October is the Breast Cancer Commoration month, Lake Erie Artists Gallery will donate 5% of any items purchased in our store or online during the month of October 2009. We like to support good causes and breast cancer research is one of the best. I am currently working on the October newsletter which should be out later today, and planning the month going forward.

As the weather changes, you can still expect Lake Erie Artists Gallery to be open at 8 am on Saturdays, but we will only be at the Shaker Square Farmers Market on the good weather days.

This is a site that is linked with the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame site, the Football Hall of Fame site, and the magazine goes into the hotel room of every visitor to the Cleveland area, so this is a big deal. I am very excited. Check out the page.

Saturday Evening at Shaker Square

Lost in Her Eyes

I am sitting in our classroom in Lake Erie Artists Gallery after a pretty long day. The weather has been rainy and sunny and windy during different parts of the day. My husband and I sat outside in our booth at Shaker Square Farmers Market this morning, and it seems like families are getting ready to go back to school this week. One of my daughters starts back Monday, but the other one does not start back until September 1. It is so hard to believe the summer has pretty much come and gone. We have done so much this summer, but yet there is so much we did not get an opportunity to do.

September is coming nevertheless, and this will be our first fall season at Shaker Square for Lake Erie Artists Gallery. In many ways, the fall and holiday season is the true test of a store. This is when many retail companies really measure their success. September is also the beginning of a new quarter for us, and even though we haven't accomplished all I set out to do this summer, we have begun to establish a presence here at Shaker Square. Today I had the pleasure of giving a customer her third piece of wall art from our store, and she wants to come back and buy another. This is the kind of loyal business we are working on building here, whether it be online or in our store, and the only thing holding us back is revenue. So as our revenue grows, so will our merchandise base, and so will our customer base, and so on as the cycle goes around again.

Every time a customer buys something from our store, part of that money goes to our artists, part to our vendors, and part to our government. We use local businesses as our vendors for packaging, printing, website services, and so on. So I like to think of the money flowing outward from here to our vendors.

Today has been a day of lots of traffic, but mostly browsers, but tomorrow is the British Car Show, so I think we will have a lot of shoppers when they get tired of looking at cool cars. We will be open tomorrow from 11 am to 6 pm, and closed on Monday.

I happen to be a Jaguar fan, so I am really looking forward to seeing the Jaguars tomorrow. My husband, two daughters, and I will be taking turns in the store and looking at cars.

Final Change to Our Hours

I have made one final change in our hours. Starting today, Lake Erie Artists Gallery will be open the following hours:
Monday, Wednesday 11 am to 6 pm
Tuesday, Thursday, Friday 11 am to 8 pm
Saturday 8 am to 9 pm
Sunday closed

The only exception to this is going to be holidays, events or classes which will be announced ahead of time.

The first event is going to be Sunday August 23, 2009. We will be open that day from 11 am to 6 pm because of the 18th Annual British Car Show that will be held at Shaker Square.

We will be closed Monday August 24, 2009 so we can have a day off.

Updating Online Information

Been updating online information this week. Our website should be back up by next week, and I am working on all of the auxiliary pages that we have. Spent some time today updating our Recipes Using St. Aubyn's Pride Gourmet Sauces page. Sold 3 of the St. Aubyn's Pride sauces today to a family from Baton Rouge, Louisiana. They are really excellent, and I love to share them with people.

Speaking of Baton Rouge, I was able to inaugurate the new Lake Erie Artists Gallery Visitors Journal today with visitors from as far away as London, England. There is a new link on the right side of this blog that you can click on any time to see where our visitors are from and what they have to say.

Getting All Kinds of Tourists Here at Shaker Square

I have been both pleased and interested to find that we are getting a significant number of tourists here in our new location at Shaker Square. In the last couple of days, I have had visitors from Taiwan, who were bringing their daughter to CWRU for Engineering School, and a doctor from Lima, Peru who is staying with his fiance (a resident at Cleveland Clinic) while he hunts for a job.

I didn't really expect to have so many people from out of town here, and really it is good for us. I had a very good suggestion made to me today to create a journal of visitors from out of town. Each person could put their name and where they are from, and a few sentences about what brings them here. How much fun is that? I think that I will publish some of it online, on a separate page of this blog. I will let you know when I get started so that you can check in from time to time.

Spent today at Shaker Square at the North Union Farmers Market in the morning, and at our store the rest of the day. It was so beautiful today, sunny and warm, very enjoyable.

My sister is visiting from Los Angeles,and she came to check out the new store, and just loved it! Had nice day in the store, and while I was there I made two new necklaces to list on Etsy. Way behind on online stuff though.

We have been selling a lot of VivaBeads jewelry lately. They make terrific gifts for co-workers or friends. There is even a line of children's bracelets, perfect for a birthday party.

The newest class list just went out via email, but if you have not gotten it or have changed emails, be sure to visit live on our new updated class website. This site will be updated every time the classes change, and classes do get added and cancelled between newsletters. So bookmark this page, and check it every once in a while, and you will have the latest information.

Today has been a very good day so far. I have been busy all day. I sold a new customer a beautiful Trollbeads bracelet, including a lace lock, dichroic ice bead, and white steel bead. It really looked good on her when she wore it out of here, and she was so happy.

I also found out that we are going to be able to hang some artwork in Dewey's coffee shop, hopefully sometime next week. We are just waiting for the wall space.

I am already getting signups for the next batch of classes, so if you want to take the classes, don't wait to sign up. I would hate to have a class closed out and you not be able to get in.

Viva Beads have been very popular here too, and we have a new shipment coming in soon. I can't wait to see the new colors, and patterns.

Got to meet Kristin Esser, the commercial property manager for Coral Company today. I have talked to her on the phone but haven't gotten to meet her in person until today. I have to say that Coral Company has been great to work with, and Kristin was just as nice as everyone else has been.

I am making some new jewelry styles using my pearl knotting technique, and combining it with my fine silver pieces. So back to that. Here is the first piece to give you an idea.

If you haven't heard of A Piece of Cleveland yet, and you are interested in local history, you should definitely check them out. According to APOC, "APOC designs and constructs quality furnishings and accessories out of materials reclaimed from deconstructed buildings in the Cleveland area. We work to preserve the history of these buildings by salvaging constructed materials and turning them around as functional products that tell a story."

APOC makes both retail items, and custom items depending on your needs. We carry several of their retail items in our store, and if you would like a custom item, we will connect you to them directly to see if they can meet your needs.

Since we have a new gallery at Shaker Square, I thought that for the next few weeks, I would reintroduce you to http://squidoo.com/lake-erie-artists-gallery">Lake Erie Artists Gallery, tell you about the items we sell, our classes, and our mission so that you know what we are all about.

I thought that I would start out with a jewelry line we carry in the gallery that is not a local artist line, Trollbeads. Trollbeads is a jewelry line that I brought into Lake Erie Artists Gallery last year when I was looking for a unique jewelry line that was artist designed and driven, yet could be purchased in gold as well as silver.

Barack Obama: Change Art Print

I have had some very interesting international customers in the last week and a half, most of them tourists. Yesterday, I met two people from Glasgow who bought some lovely earrings in Lake Erie Artists Gallery, but today President Obama is here in Cleveland, Ohio speaking at the Cleveland Clinic, and later this afternoon, his motorcade will be driving right by this area on his way to Shaker Heights High School.

Do you think they let the President go shopping in local galleries for souvenirs of his trips? He will be very close to here, so I can only hope.

It is kind of a rainy day here in Cleveland, Ohio, not atypical of this time of year (or any time of year when it is not snowing), so it is a perfect day to shop. I have some great gifts that would be appropriate for Mrs. Obama and the girls. What do you all think?

Two Excellent Days in a Row

This has been a busy week at Lake Erie Artists Gallery. We have had three classes run, sold several items in the store, and met lots of new customers including a family from Ireland who are living here in the U.S. for one year.

Today was the first day that I sold art off the wall, but made up for it by selling three pieces of framed art.

We are also becoming successful in the custom framing department. We have already framed one set of three pictures for one gentleman, and now we are framing a piece of art on canvas for another customer.

All in all, I am very happy with the way things are going. We are looking forward to another busy day tomorrow between the farmers market and regular Saturday traffic.

I am sitting in the gallery today on this beautiful Sunday, and I think that I have finally decided to close on Sundays to give myself and my family a day off. Introducing Artist Mindy Sand

I would like to introduce artist Mindy Sand who is now showing her beautiful hand painted glassware in our new location at Shaker Square.

Mindy's work is just beautiful, especially in natural light. She paints the glasses, dishes, and bowls with a special paint that is baked into the glass making it safe for food and able to be washed in the upper rack of your dishwasher. Lake Erie Artists Gallery Official Hours

I have finally made some decisions about our hours at least through the end of the summer. We are going to be open on Wednesdays, so here are the official hours:
Mon, Thurs, Fri 11 am to 8 pm
Tues, Wed 11 am to 6 pm
Sat 8 am to 8:30 pm (although if we are busy I will stay open later)
Sun 12pm to 5 pm
If we have classes, we will stay open later until the class is over.

Today was the deciding factor. We are very busy today, and since the gallery is sort of starting over in this location, I do not want to miss even one potential customer.

We will be OPEN on Saturday July 4th from 8 am to 8:30 pm. Then we will be hopefully going to see some fireworks. The Shaker Square Farmers Market will also be open from 8 am to 12 noon as usual, and the Shaker Square Concert Series will also be on from 6 pm to 9 pm. Concerts are on the South lawn, and totally free. Just bring a blanket or chair.

Been Trying to Decide What Hours Make the Most Sense

I am about to post our newest newsletter via email announcing all of our classes for July and some for August, and I am trying to decide still what our hours are for the summer.

It seems like we will be open on Sundays for sure, because we have been getting traffic on Sunday, but might be closed during a weekday possibly Wednesday. I will go another week before I decide. Our busiest times seem to be Friday afternoon, all day Saturday, and the evenings that we are open. Of course, as the classes start to fill up we will be open more evenings. What a dilemna! The decisions to make being a store owner.

Summer Solstice Festival in Shaker Heights

Spent my evening with my daughter, Bryn, at the Shaker Arts Council Summer Solstice Festival next to the Shaker Heights Library on Lee Road in Shaker Heights. It was a really windy evening, but the music was great, and I got to meet a lot of new people. Bryn and I passed out flyers for art classes, and listened to the music all night.

There was a juggler, magician, and stiltwalker there too. Definitely something to do again next year.

Meeting the Locals

This afternoon, I just met Dewey from Dewey's coffee shop which is just two doors away from my new store, and that is one of the best things about having the Shaker Square location. Each store and restaurant has a great personality. Okay, I am a bit biased, but I have to say that Dewey's is such a great place to hang out, and they have great food too. So far my favorite is the banana bread. It goes great with my morning coffee. And the coffee is excellent.

Today for lunch I am having Hungarian cucumber salad from my next door neighbor, Balaton. Just about time to go over and buy some from them. And Sunday was my mother's birthday, so I bought her a gift certificate from Sarava, the Brazilian restaurant around the Square from here.

If you haven't been to Shaker Square lately, you are really missing something.

Yay! Painting is Done

The store has been busy every day this week, and more and more people are discovering us. Today we were at the North Union Farmers Market at Shaker Square and ran out of postcards and class lists to give people. For an up-to-date list of classes, check this page. Shaker Square is such a fun place to be. I love the Farmers Market and the free concerts on Saturdays. Tonight the group is Band of Thunder, an R&B and gospel band.

Starting to Feel Like Home

It finally feels like we are just about moved in. I have been spending this week hanging pictures, sorting through our inventory, meeting customers, and getting our classroom ready. The photo on this post is from the register in the middle of the store looking towards the front windows.

I have already found that Shaker Square is a great neighborhood to be in. People have been in just about every day welcoming us to the neighborhood. The store is almost completely painted. We just have to finish about one wall in the classroom and some woodwork in the front of the store. Should be done this Saturday.

I have even climbed the extremely high ladder to replace some burnt out lights (and I am not fond of heights). Today I am going to start working on getting our signage up.

Baby Steps, Baby Steps

The week has been very full so far. Other than struggling with the phone company to get all my services turned on, everything else is going well. I have cleaned about 75% of the jewelry in the store, met a new artist, and am slowly unpacking, and putting things away.

Had quite a bit of traffic this week since Monday. People seem very excited to have us in the neighborhood. This weekend we should get most of the classroom painted and cleared out for public use, so that will make the entire store space usable. My first class is starting on Monday to introduce PMC. I am still looking for teachers to teach this summer, fall and winter, so contact me via email if you are interested.

My internet connection is intermittent, so I am trying to get a lot done before it goes down. We will be at the Shaker Square Farmers Market tomorrow and the store will be open during the market hours from 8 am to 12 noon, so stop by and say hello.

Today I am Polishing Jewelry

Today is Day 2 for the new gallery being open. Each hour things look a little more together. Last night my husband and I figured out why some of the lights weren't working, so now we have lights in the windows. I hung some more pictures yesterday, and today I am polishing all the silver jewelry a bit at a time. Since everything sat for a month, it is a bit tarnished, and I like it to be very shiny. Today is a short day, and we are closing in about 15 minutes.

I couldn't find my tumbler to polish the jewelry, so I just kept unpacking boxes until I could find it. Now all of the cool wood carvings by Ed Hrncir are out, and all of the kids kits have been found.

If you stop by in the next few weeks, we have some kids craft items 50% off because we are selling them out, and won't be carrying them at this new store. A few ceramic pieces, prints and art supplies are also on sale.

Tomorrow I get a new phone, new DSL line, and my computer will work much faster here. Right now I am using Shaker Square's WiFi, which is okay but not as reliable as having my own line.

By tomorrow I will be sending out an email blast with our new classes, so look for that. I will be here from 8 am to 8 pm tomorrow waiting for the phone guy, so I should get a lot more done.

We are Open!

WE ARE OPEN! Today is the first day of our new store, and I have already had more customers here than I did on a typical day downtown in the last few months. I think that bodes well for this store. I don't even have any signage up yet, and people are walking in.

I will be hanging pictures today. I still have a lot of that to do. We are not even close to full of product although I still have some unpacking to do. Even so the store is bright and cheerful inside and has big lovely windows to advertise our products. I am very excited.

At this point we have three terrific new artists in the store. Today I will just talk about one of them--a group of artists/woodworkers--A Piece of Cleveland. For those of you unfamiliar with A Piece of Cleveland, they are a taking wood from deconstructed houses and other buildings, and reusing the wood to make great furniture and other wood accessories. So far in the store we have a glass topped wood writing or display table, cutting boards, two types of lamps, and nesting tables. Stop by to see them.

It is Time to Reopen

Although we are not 100% ready, Lake Erie Artists Gallery is opening on schedule tomorrow am at 11 o'clock. For directions and hours, follow this link. This week we will continue to get the new gallery in tip top shape. The classroom still needs to be finished, but should be mostly complete by the next weekend. Classes are scheduled for June, and anyone can pick up class schedules starting this Tuesday.

The gallery is bright and cheerful, with three new artists so far. Leah Gilbert has brought in her beaded jewelry line, A Piece of Cleveland has brought in lamps and furniture made from recycled wood, and Mindy Sand has brought in beautiful painted glasses and bowls. We continue to have a wide variety of prints, jewelry, books, t-shirts, platters, and other great gift items and our stock will continue to grow over the next few months. We have yet to set up our vintage corner, and our green gift section is just started. Events will be listed on our website and in the window of our store starting on Tuesday.

Getting Things in Order

Spent most of yesterday putting things away in order to open on Monday. More of the same today. Chris from A Piece of Cleveland dropped of some items too. So the window displays are mostly up, but I still need to figure out why the lights in the windows are not working.

Things are shaping up nicely. Today artist Mindy Sand will bringing in her work. I am very excited to see what she has. On Wednesday, Leah Gilbert brought in her jewelry.

Getting Ready to Open

About another week and we will be open again in our new location. We are almost done painting the entire space and are starting to open all the boxes and put everything away. It will probably take another month to get everything up and get all the kinks worked out but I am excited to get things going again, and reactivate everything.

Besides painting, we have done some repairs like replacing baseboards, cleaning the wood platforms in the bay windows in the front of the store, and just cleaning. Lots of great events and classes in the works. I should have a schedule put together in the next few days.

My next step after opening will be setting up my office and workshop and unburying and going threw every single piece of paper. I need to do a lot of address changing.

We are all in--Phew--now to unpack

Although it seemed to me like our merchandise and fixtures were multiplying behind my back, I finally brought the last and final load to the new space on Saturday. I am definitely too old to do this again, so that is just more impetus to make this new store an AMAZING place for people to come and shop.

This week I collapsed for a few days, and today I am at the store, trying to begin to catch up with things. For one thing, we need a new phone, and we need to finish painting.

The plan is to finish all the painting in the front two rooms this Saturday, so that I can spend next week getting them set up. Our new artists will soon be dropping off their new stuff, and I just can't wait!

The new shop is going to be such a happy place to be with bright colored walls and a cozy atmosphere. My new neighbors at Balaton are great too. Next week things will be a little more organized.

Big Move Today

Starting out early today. Showered and dressed and relatively awake. Going to move the big cases today, and lots of other stuff. Should have some more pictures to post by tonight.

We rented a UHaul van yesterday. I was having a little trouble figuring out how close or how far I was from things, but I should do okay for the next few days. It is pretty hot here today, so that should make things interesting, but all in all it is a good day for moving.

Started Painting Today

We started painting today, and actually got quite far, more than I expected. We had to remove hundreds of screw anchors from the wall, patch, and repair spots before we could really paint. Even with that to do, we managed to almost completely paint one entire wall and start on the rest. One wall is going to be teal, and the rest are a very light yellow. The blue looks great and hopefully the rest will look just as good tomorrow.

Rainy Day

It is raining pretty hard here in Cleveland today. I just dropped my daughter, Tamar, off to school at Heights High, and on my way back it started to come down in big drops. Today will be a good catch up day, and get organized day. I am going to work on the computer most of the morning, then later in the day go to the new gallery and put some of the things away that we have brought over, get an office space started, and work on patching up the walls some. The previous tenant left a bunch of anchors in the wall for screws and I need to take them out and patch the walls for painting later this week.

Picking Paint Colors

Stopped at the Sherwin-Williams store this morning to pick out paint colors for the new store. I love going there because their staff always knows what they are doing. At first I was going to paint typical gallery colors, off white, white, or cream on the walls and the woodwork. But I have changed my mind, and now I want to paint my logo colors in lighter shades. This will make the store a happy place to visit.

So today I picked up some teal paint samples, and mustard. I think we will paint one wall in a medium teal shade, and the rest a very light mustard, almost a white with some mustard in it. Then have the beautiful woodwork just off white. The woodwork in the new space is really gorgeous, left over from the original purpose of the space.

I am also working on getting the exterior signage taken care of. Not sure yet what I will be allowed to put up because Shaker Square is a historic site, so there are some special rules for the type of signage. Hopefully, I can get that worked out by the end of next week.

So we can all "thank Sherwin-Williams" this week for the new look in the store.

Moving Progress

Stopped by our new space today on my way downtown. Every time I stop by, I am thrilled all over again.

Friday, I am going to spend some time in the new space putting some things in the windows, and starting to work on the walls. My daughter, Bryn, is off school this week, so she can help me.

I have a massive checklist for the move.

Each time I accomplish something, I feel a little happier.
Hired a mover, check.
Moved another car load, check.
Set up another class, check.

Today I need to call about getting a new sign for the front. Because Shaker Square is a historic site, there are lots of rules about what we can use for signage.

Getting Things Moved

Things are moving forward step by step. Today I hired a mover to move our large jewelry cases and furniture. That stuff is getting moved on Monday April 27 in the morning. That is a sigh of relief for me.

I got a quote to paint the new space, and it was way out of budget for me, so my husband and I are going to do all the repair and painting ourselves. We are going to get that done next week, so that it is done by the time the furniture arrives. I am going to pick out a color in the next few days. I am starting to lean toward a pale yellow to give the store a happy feel to it.

Even though we are leaving a lot of fixtures behind because they belong to the mall, we still are packing and moving a lot as well. Right now, I am trying to get rid of the leftover things that we don't want, and recycle the extra cardboard that we have been saving for shipping. We are selling off some inventory at reduced prices before the move just to have less to pack. One more payment to Tower City and then that obligation will be fulfilled.

Just have to keep going forward one step at a time.

Got the Keys Today

Got the keys today to our new space at Shaker Square today, and did a quick walk through.

It is even better than I thought it would be. I am very excited to get it all together. First things first, though. Meeting with a painter tomorrow to paint the space. Then we will clean it. I am going to start moving all the office stuff over there and get it set up. Then the phone can be transferred. I am meeting a mover next week to get things moved in.

The next few weeks will be strenuous and tiring but it will all be worth it.

The First Sign of Spring

We usually think of the first sign of spring as the song of birds or the first crocus we see, but this year it is the sign I took down yesterday at the Tower City store to put in the window of the Shaker Square store tomorrow when I get the keys.

It is just a sign on foam core but it has our logo and that is a good start. People will walk by and wonder what is coming in. Do you see me smiling?

I have been thinking over our move to Shaker Square today and last night, and I think that I am going to move up the timetable a bit. I was originally going to wait until the end of April to actively get the new store in shape, but now I think as soon as I get it cleaned and painted to my requirements, I will start moving more than I thought I would. I am going to try to get the big cases moved earlier in April, so that I can open before Mother's Day. So that would only have us closed for two weeks.

Unfortunately, Tower City has not been a mecca of shoppers lately, so getting in and started at Shaker Square makes more sense. And that way we can invite people to shop for Mother's Day at the new store.

Keep tuned for progress. Today I am taking down some of the track lighting I installed in Tower City and emptying out one room. Also taking home some smaller fixtures.

Funny Thing Happened Today

Today I stopped into The Coral Company's office to drop off my rent check for the new space at Shaker Square and I met Peter Rubin, the CEO. He was telling me that he always posted a google alert on any new company that was going to start a store in one of his spaces and on the owner. Then he complained that I was filling up his inbox with all of the alerts he was getting.

I had to laugh and tell him that I had cancelled the alerts on my own company and myself because I was getting too much email.

I am hopefully going to get the keys sometime on Monday and do a walkthough of the space to see what needs doing before we starting moving in.

Taking the Plunge

I am finally ready to publish the new website. Yay! We had to test a few things, including making sure the credit card system worked, and now all that is left is transferring over the domain. Hopefully, that will happen today. I have been daily adding merchandise onto the site, so you should see changes every day.

I am really excited and a bit crazed by all of the changes happening with Lake Erie Artists Gallery right now, but we are making strides toward all of them and they will be great for everyone.

It is almost like coming out of a cocoon. With the new website coming along nicely, and the Shaker Square Farmer's Market starting next week, I am planning to turn in the lease for the new space today, and should get the keys by early next week.

We will paint the new space then start unpacking and putting everything away. Stay tuned to learn of the progress in that direction.

Lake Erie Artists Gallery is Moving to Shaker Square

Start looking for Lake Erie Artists Gallery at Shaker Square, starting with the Shaker Square Farmers Market which begins again on Saturday, April 11, 2009 from 8 am to 12 noon. We will have a booth again this year at the market.

Our biggest news is that we are moving our store to Shaker Square also. Our last month in Tower City is April. Lots of items will be on sale, so stop by the store to help us reduce inventory for the move. Late May we are expected to reopen in our new location, in the northwest quadrant of Shaker Square next to Balaton Restaurant.

In our new location, we will be teaching classes on all kinds of art related topics so stay tuned for the class list.

Cleveland International Film Festival Starts This Week

The Cleveland International Film Festival starts this week, and with it bringing all sorts of international visitors to Cleveland, Ohio for 10 days.

The festival is always great, and the films are inspiring, funny, emotional, and educational. These are not films that you will find anywhere, but lots of independent films from all over the world.

The festival also runs commercial shorts, and other short films. I encourage you to come to downtown Cleveland, and check it out. And while you are here, stop by our gallery at the east end of Tower City.

Winter is slowly coming to a close, and in Cleveland, Ohio that means that the Cleveland International Film Festival will be here soon. The film festival program books are out and available for you to peruse right now, so that you can get your program lined up in advance.

This festival is a unique opportunity for Clevelanders to see films that they cannot see any other time of the year. We also get lots of visitors from all over the world, filmmakers, and filmgoers to see the films.

Putting a Tip Jar on Squidoo Lenses or Other Free Forums

Lately there has been quite a bit of discussion in various forums about adding a tip jar to a Squidoo lens, a blog, or other places where people are posting information for free use. I have heard both sides of the argument, and have thought it over quite a bit. I thought it was time for me to add my 2 cents to the argument.

I think that there is a time that is appropriate for collecting tips for a service provided. However, I do not think that tips are appropriate on a Squidoo lens or other places that you can post for free. Here is why:

You are posting for free, so you do not need to defray your expense.
People can get similar free advice from other sources that do not make them feel guilty.
If your information is good enough, you will earn money from the post either through directing traffic to something that you are selling, or in the case of a Squidoo lens--through shared earnings if you have enough traffic.
Some people will be offended by your tip jar, and will not come back. The continued traffic is more important than the small amount of money you would raise with a tip jar.

I am not in any way opposed to a person having items for sale on their Squidoo lens. But in that case, if the reader is not interested, they just won't buy. They still have contributed to your lens via reading, commenting, and possibly rating it.

Getting Your Squidoo Lenses to Get Indexed on Google

Getting your Squidoo lenses and blog posts to index on Google quickly is always a dilemma, because we don't always know what Google uses for criteria when they send out their search engine spiders to crawl our posts.

I have noticed lately that now that I am doing more careful research of my keywords for titles and focus in my lenses, my google lenses show up within about 24 hours of being published. And that is pretty darn good, since they can't get Google traffic until the lenses are indexed on Google. My blog posts also get indexed within a day but I have been consistently posting on this blog for well over a year now.

So my advice to you as writers and Squidoo lensmasters would be to carefully research your keywords for your lens. Use the keywords in your title and in your introduction sprinkle them throughout the lens. If your keywords are able to fill a hole in Google's search engine, then your lens will get indexed more quickly.

Researching your keywords is something that you should be doing before you publish any lens, anyway. Find a grouping of words that is being searched and not being written about on your topic, then use it in your lens. That way, you will be writing to a targeted audience who is looking for information on your topic.

This is a Sports Week in Cleveland

This week the U.S. Figure Skating Championships are being held here in Cleveland, Ohio just a block from where I work. Lake Erie Artists Gallery is in downtown Cleveland, in between the Quicken Loans arena where the Cleveland Cavaliers play and where the Skating Championships are being held, and a few blocks from the Cleveland Indians stadium and also from the Cleveland Browns stadium. You can park here and walk to any of the three.

That is one of the exciting things about working here downtown. I am not a sports fanatic, but I sure love to see the excitement of all the people coming through here. I also like to watch both basketball and baseball, although I would rather watch football on TV in a nice warm room.

Figure skating is one of my favorites, though. I met a customer in my gallery this week who came here from Washington, D.C. just as a fan to watch the trials. Pretty exciting for everyone involved.

This post is in response to a comment I received when I last posted regarding affiliate earnings on Squidoo. Now first of all, I would love to get more feedback on this. But in response to Tiddlewinks, I would like to say that I do know that many lensmasters are earning money every month from Squidoo directly and much more money from affiliate programs.

Most of the people that I have heard are selling on Squidoo are people that are consistently updating their lenses, making sure their lenses are attracting the right kind of traffic, and are online just about daily to keep track of their work.

I know that my own lenses started out earning very little but have started to increase month by month. Now I have only been on Squidoo since June 2008, but I have already earned over $100 in one month from my Squidoo lenses and have had more and more sales and traffic build over time. Can anyone contribute their experience? I think it is just getting better at your niche, and continuing to write and improve your lenses, and keywords. It is not going to happen overnight, but it will happen. Can anyone else comment on this? My theory is if you want to make a fulltime income, you have to put in a lot of hours to build up the income.

I am sitting here in my very quiet gallery drinking my second hazelnut latte for the day. It is snowing like mad outside here in downtown Cleveland Ohio, and all around this area. The snow is gorgeous as long as I don't have to go out and drive in it, but I will have to go home eventually.
There is just something about drinking a hazelnut latte that comforts me. It is my favorite coffee drink. Since it is so quiet, I am working mostly on the computer today. I am finally started to earn regular payouts from the Squidoo articles that I have been writing. On Squidoo, they call them lenses because they are short webpages focused on one subject. We just had another payout for November, and I earned $43.61 directly from Squidoo. My Squidoo income keeps going up and now my affiliate links are started to pay off.
I think it took me until November to really start to understand how to make lenses that would actually pay me in more than one way. I started on Squidoo in June of 2008, and by September I had over 50 lenses. But just having a lens, doesn't mean that people will shop from it.
Each day has been part of the journey, and Squidoo has a great community of experienced lensmasters that can help. It is just that it sometimes takes a while for the concepts to sink in. Especially if you are not experienced online. Just in December, my affiliates started to pay off, and so now are my lenses earning extra money from sales through the Squidoo modules. I am slowly rewriting my earlier lenses with more focus and the targeted audience in mind.
It is amazing to me that I can write an article about something I love, and pass on that enthusiasm to other lovers of that item. They are already primed to like what I am talking about, so it is natural for some of them to buy from my lenses.

Are you like me? A person who loves to be warm all the time in a bitter cold and snowy climate? Well, I am sure that is what makes me such a huge coffee lover.
